Revit add-in

Load families into a project

Browse your library from inside Revit and load a family into the open model.

Work in progress

This page is a draft. Some sections are placeholders and details may change.

The add-in docks inside Revit and connects to your cloud library, so you do not have to hunt through network folders.

Find a family

Open the add-in from the OceanBIM panel on the Add-Ins tab. Its side menu mirrors the web app: Dashboard, My families, Favorites, Share, Trash and Workspaces.

  • My families is your personal library. Workspaces holds your team's libraries; open one and use its Families tab.
  • Switch between List view and Thumbnail view, narrow the list with Filters (choose Clear filters to reset), and use Load more at the bottom to bring in the next page.
  • Refresh reloads the list from the cloud.
  • Mark families you use often as favorites and find them again under Favorites.

Load a family into the open model

  1. Find the family.
  2. Open its row menu and choose Load to Revit.
  3. The family is placed in the open Revit project and is ready to use from Revit's Project Browser, as if you had loaded it from a file.

You can also drag a family from the add-in into a Revit view.

To load several at once, tick them with the checkboxes (Select all selects the whole list) and use the same action.

Revit identifies a family by its name

If the project already contains a family with the same name, loading replaces it with the version from the cloud, and parameter values come from the loaded copy. In a workspace the row then reads Reload in Revit: choosing it brings the current cloud version down again.

If the families you selected include two that share a name, the add-in stops with Families with the same name and asks which copy to load before it continues: Revit can only hold one family of a given name, so the second would silently replace the first. Choose Load to continue or Cancel.

Download is different: it only saves the .rfa file on your computer and does not touch the open model.

TODO — Confirm before publishing

  • Whether a family can be loaded at an earlier version than the current one from the add-in, and how that is chosen.
  • What the add-in says while a load is running and when Revit refuses a file (for example one saved in a newer Revit).
  • Whether Favorites works the same way in workspaces, and how to mark one from the add-in.
