Publish families from Revit
Upload families and new versions from Revit, and what happens next.
Work in progress
You can upload families and publish new versions without leaving Revit.
Two destinations
| You publish to | What happens |
|---|---|
| Your personal library (My families) | The family is uploaded and becomes current straight away. There is no approval step. |
| A workspace | The family is sent as a request and waits for an approver. |
For your personal library, open My families in the add-in and choose Upload families. The rest of this page is about workspaces.
Connect the model to a workspace
A workspace upload needs the open Revit model to be connected to a workspace, and optionally to one of its projects. The connection decides where families from this model go and who may approve them.
- In the add-in, open Workspaces and choose the workspace.
- Open its Settings and find Revit connection. It shows the Current open Revit file.
- Choose Connect. The Connect to Workspace window lists the families in the open model, grouped by category, with a search box. Tick the ones to connect. A family the workspace cannot take stays in the list, dimmed, with the reason. If two families share a name, you are asked which one to keep before Connect is enabled, because Revit holds only one family of a given name. Choose a project, or none to connect to the workspace itself.
- The page then reads Connected to the workspace, and Connected by and the time it was made. Disconnect removes the link; Reconnect workspace re-establishes it.
If you start a sync while the model is not connected, the add-in stops with Revit connection required and its Open Configs button takes you to the connection page. Manage all connections lists every model connected to the workspace.
Publish
- In the workspace, choose Create sync item (or Upload families).
- In Sync families to workspace, pick the families from the open model and write a commit message; it is required.
- The add-in shows Checking workspace rules and lock status... and then the result for each family. Choose Synchronize to send what passed.
When you publish in a workspace, nothing changes in the shared library by itself. Each family becomes a request with a pending version that nobody else can see or download until an approver accepts it. See Approve changes. Your requests are listed under Sync requests, with their status.
You can have up to 5 requests waiting at once, which stops one person from queuing a hundred.
What can stop a family
Before anything is uploaded, the add-in checks the family against the workspace's naming rules and upload rules, and the server checks again, so the rules cannot be skipped. A family is also stopped, and the result tells you which, when:
- its name or contents break one of the workspace's rules (see How upload rules work);
- the family is locked, checked out by another person;
- another person already has an unreviewed request for the same family.
Families are matched by name, ignoring upper and lower case.
Locking a family
A family can be locked to one person while they work on it. Anyone else can ask for ownership, which keeps two people from submitting competing versions.
A padlock on a family's row shows it is locked. Click it to open Family locked with the details. If someone else holds it, Go to sync requests takes you to the place where you can ask for it. If you hold it, the button reads Release checkout and gives it back.
If you open a family that someone else has locked, Revit offers Request ownership or Edit anyway. Edit anyway lets you change the family on this computer only. Cloud sync stays blocked until ownership is released.
TODO — Confirm before publishing
- The exact path that opens Sync families to workspace from the open model (the add-in's ribbon button, the Workspaces tab, or both) and how families in the model are listed.
- What each failed rule check says in the result.
- How a lock is handed over from one person to another, step by step. (B3)
- What happens to a request that stays unreviewed.
