Versions and rollback
Keep every version of a family and go back when an update goes wrong.
Work in progress
When you upload a new version of a family, it becomes the current version and the previous one moves into the family's version history. Nothing is overwritten.
From the version history you can:
- open any earlier version and see its parameters, types and 3D preview;
- download an earlier version;
- roll back by making an earlier version the current one.
Version history and rollback are part of every plan. See Pricing for what each plan includes.
Add a new version
On the family's page, use any of these:
- the version picker under the name, then Add new version;
- the ⋯ menu, then New version;
- the Versions tab, then Manage versions, and drop the file on the upload area.
Choose the .rfa file, check the summary (it tells you which version number the
file will become), then choose Upload version. The new version becomes the
current one.
From Revit, publishing a family into a workspace also creates a new version. There it may need approval first; see Approve changes.
Look at an earlier version
Choose an earlier version in the version picker. The page then shows that version's parameters, types, identity data and 3D preview, so you can check what it contained before you go back to it.
Roll back
- On the Versions tab, choose Manage versions.
- Open the ⋯ menu of the version you want and choose Set as current.
The version you picked becomes current again. The others stay in the history, so you can roll forward the same way.
Delete a version
Open the version's ⋯ menu in Manage versions and choose Delete:
- An earlier version is deleted permanently, together with its file. It does not go to Trash and cannot be restored, and its file no longer counts toward your storage.
- The current version cannot be deleted. Make another version current first.
- If it is the only version, deleting it moves the whole family to Trash, where you can restore it.
Comparing parameters between versions
When someone sends a new version of a workspace family for approval, the review screen can compare its parameters with the current version, so the approver sees exactly what changed. See Approve changes.
