Upload families
Add Revit family files to your cloud library, and understand the check every upload goes through.
Work in progress
Upload your .rfa files once and they are available to everyone with access, in
the office, at home or on site. The category, Revit version, types and parameter
count are read from each file automatically.
Upload to My families
Open the folder
Open My families in the app menu. To put the files in a folder, open that folder first.
Choose your files
Choose Upload, then Families to pick .rfa files, or Folders to pick
a whole folder. You can also drag files or a folder from Windows onto the list.
An empty folder shows the same two choices as Upload families and Upload
folder.
When you upload a folder, its subfolders are created in your library with the
same structure. Only .rfa files are taken; anything else is skipped and the app
tells you which files it left out.
Fix anything the check finds
Every file is checked before it is uploaded: against your rules, and for duplicate names. If everything passes, the upload starts straight away. If something needs your attention, Check before upload opens and lists it. Fix or remove anything it blocks, and choose what to do with duplicates. See Check before upload.
Watch the upload
A panel shows each family's progress. A finished family has its details filled in.
- To stop one file, point at it and choose Cancel upload.
- To stop everything, choose Cancel all. Closing the panel while files are still uploading asks you to confirm first.
- A file that failed, for example because the connection dropped, or that you cancelled, shows Retry upload.
One upload to My families takes up to 100 families, in folders up to 5 levels deep. For more, upload in batches.
Upload to a workspace
In a workspace, choose Upload families on the Families tab. The upload takes three steps:
- Destination: upload to the workspace itself or to one of its projects. For a project you can also choose a discipline. Optionally add the new families to a collection, and choose the folder they go in.
- Select families: choose files or a folder, or drag them in. One upload takes up to 200 files, and dropped folders keep their structure.
- Review and upload: the families are checked against the workspace's rules before anything is sent. Choose Upload.
Whether a family appears at once depends on who uploads it. If you can approve changes in that place (the workspace owner, a workspace admin, an admin of the project or an approver assigned to it), the new families and versions become current straight away. Otherwise each one becomes a request that waits for an approver, with "Bulk upload" as its message. See Approve changes.
Why a file might be stopped
Your library has rules, and a file that breaks any of them does not enter it. The rules are yours to set:
| If the file... | It is checked by | Set up in |
|---|---|---|
| is too big or too small, is the wrong category, or was saved in the wrong Revit version | File rules | File rules |
| has characters or a length that is not allowed | Filename rules | Filename rules |
| is not named in the order and with the values you require | Naming pattern | Naming pattern |
| has the same name as a family you already have | The duplicate check | Check before upload |
is not a valid .rfa exported from Revit | Always |
If you have not set any rules, nothing is blocked for those reasons. For how all of this fits together, start with How upload rules work.
Uploading a large library
A very large library is best moved in stages, a folder at a time, so that you can fix what the check blocks before the next batch.
