Organize your library
Use folders, categories, tags and collections to keep families findable.
Work in progress
Start by gathering every .rfa file from local and network folders into one
library, then give it a consistent structure.
| Use | For |
|---|---|
| Folders | Broad grouping of families |
| Categories | The Revit category of a family |
| Tags | Attributes such as status or use |
| Collections | Curated sets in a workspace that you hand around or publish |
Revit metadata is read automatically when you upload, so organizing does not mean retyping it. See Tags for how tags work, and How upload rules work for making sure names stay consistent.
Three ways to look at the same library
At the top of My families you can switch between:
- Folder: your folder tree on the left, the contents of the open folder on the right.
- Category: families grouped by their Revit category, which is read from the file. You do not set it.
- Tags: families grouped by the tags you gave them.
Folders
- Create a folder: choose New folder, or New folder root above the
tree for a top-level folder. A name is 2 to 50 characters and cannot contain
< > : " / \ | ? *. A new folder can follow your general naming rules or a saved naming convention; see Naming conventions. - Rename, move or copy: open the folder's ⋯ menu and choose Rename, Move or Copy to folder.
- Upload a folder from your computer and its subfolders are created for you. See Upload families.
Working with families
Each family has a ⋯ menu with Move, Copy to folder, Copy to workspace…, Rename, New version, Tags, Share, Download and Delete.
To act on several at once, tick them in the list. A bar offers Move, Copy, Share, Move to trash and Download.
Collections
Collections belong to a workspace, not to My families. In a workspace, open the Collections tab and choose New collection, or add families to a collection as you upload them. A collection can be published to the public gallery.
Favorites and Trash
Mark families you use often as favorites with the star on their row, and find them under Favorites in the app menu.
Deleted families and folders go to Trash, where they stay for 30 days before they are removed for good. In Trash you can:
- Restore an item to where it was. If its folder was deleted too, restore the folder first.
- Delete forever one item, or Empty Trash to remove everything now.
Families in Trash still count toward your storage. Delete forever stops them counting straight away, and cannot be undone.
Your library and workspace libraries
My families is your personal library: only you see it, unless you share something from it. A workspace is a shared library for a team, with its own folders, projects, collections and rules. You can copy a family from My families into a workspace with Copy to workspace…. See Workspaces and roles.
